Flash Floods in Malana: Vehicles Washed Away, 400+ Roads Closed in Himachal, India

Himachal Pradesh is reeling under the impact of flash floods and continuous monsoon rains, with over 400 roads closed and multiple districts facing severe disruption. Heavy rainfall since Friday evening has triggered widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and safety alerts across the state.

Mandi, Chamba Among Worst-Hit; Key Highways Blocked

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 174 roads have been shut in Mandi district alone, including key stretches of the Kullu-Manali highway. More than 100 roads are also closed in Chamba district.

In Hamirpur, a section of a bridge over the Beas River near Sujanpur Tira developed cracks due to rising water levels in the river and its tributaries.

Malana Hydropower Cofferdam Breach Captured on Video

Disturbing visuals emerged showing a partial breach in the cofferdam of the Malana-II Hydropower Project. Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment when the swollen Malana River washed away a dumper truckrock breaker, and a car.

Record Rainfall in Una, Schools Closed

The heaviest rainfall in the state was recorded in Una, which received a staggering 260.8 mm of rain. Roads and marketplaces in the district were submerged, prompting the closure of educational institutions until further notice. Even the Chandigarh-Dharamshala National Highway was affected by flooding.

Government on Alert as Damage Mounts

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri assured the public that the administration is closely monitoring the situation:

“The state government is on full alert and is constantly monitoring the situation. The district administration has been instructed to take immediate necessary steps, prioritising the safety of residents in the affected areas.”

Himachal’s Monsoon Toll

Since the start of the monsoon season on June 20, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed:

  • 101 rain-related deaths
  • 36 people still missing
  • 1,600 homes fully or partially damaged
  • 51 flash floods, 28 cloudbursts, and 45 major landslides
