Windows 11 Start Menu Will Soon Have Ads: How to Turn Them Off

Windows 11’s Start menu is getting an update, which might upset some users. Microsoft is introducing Start menu advertisements with the upcoming Windows 11 update, which is anticipated to reach all users this week.

The ads appear in the recommended area, and the tech giant promotes them as a discoverability feature for learning about “great” Microsoft Store apps. However, for those who like to keep their Start menu clean and free of unwanted adverts, there is an easy way to disable them.

The personalised ads are part of Microsoft’s Windows KB5036980 update, which has been in preview for the last two weeks. The Verge reported that the company began testing with ads earlier this month.

The IT giant has now acknowledged the addition of advertisements on its support page, stating, “The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps. These apps come from a small set of curated developers. This will help you to discover some of the great apps that are available.”

According to reports, some users have already seen these advertisements. Currently, the recommended section displays the most recently used files and apps, but, according to several screenshots we’ve seen online, advertisements will begin to appear in this part.

Interestingly, there are no visual cues to distinguish a promoted app from one you already have, except from the user’s knowledge of installed apps. There is one minor clue: whereas all other installed apps show the last time they were used, promoted apps include a brief description.

How To Disable Windows 11 Start Menu Ads

Luckily, Microsoft does not force these ads on people without providing an escape route. The company has also provided an easy option for disabling this advertising. Some users may benefit from these advertisements because they are curated by select developers and may help in the discovery of suitable apps.
