WhatsApp Reportedly Working on Secret Code for Locked Chats on Web Client

WhatsApp has been discovered working on an update to the Chat Lock feature, which is apparently being developed for the popular messaging app’s web version. Users may currently lock particular chats on WhatsApp for iOS and Android using a secret code, which can help improve users’ privacy on the network.

According to information given by a feature tracker, the service is planned to provide WhatsApp Web users with similar features.

WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, discovered that the recently announced secret codes for locked chats capability would soon be available via the web client. The function is expected to increase WhatsApp users’ privacy and is presently in development, therefore beta testers will not be able to test it on the most recent version.

The feature is believed to work similarly to the one offered on WhatsApp for Android and iOS, allowing users to lock and hide some chats from the main list of messages using a secret code. This code could be a word or a sentence, including emoji and special characters. Users can then use the same secret code to view a list of locked and hidden chats.

WhatsApp users can utilise this feature to keep some of their discussions private on a shared laptop or desktop computer to which more than one person has access. These chats, like the Chat Lock feature on WhatsApp for iOS and Android that was introduced in November, are only viewable when the secret code is entered correctly.

Users on mobile versions of WhatsApp will see locked chats after the secret code is exposed, but only while the app is active. Reopening the app will hide the chats again, needing the secret code to be input once more. Users can also disable the secret code feature and return to the previous chat lock functionality, which required biometric identification.
