Pickett Fire Grows to 6,803 Acres as 1,200 Firefighters Battle Blaze in Napa County

California is grappling with multiple wildfires as a record-breaking heatwave and dry lightning trigger dangerous fire conditions across the state. Among the most significant blazes is the Pickett Fire in Napa County, which broke out Thursday afternoon in a rural area east of Calistoga.

Pickett Fire Spreads Rapidly, Minimal Containment

According to Cal Fire, the Pickett Fire grew from 1,200 acres on Thursday night to 6,803 acres as of Sunday and is only 11% contained. Evacuation orders remain in effect for communities near the fire zone.

The blaze is burning close to some of Napa Valley’s iconic vineyards and wineries along the western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains. On Saturday alone, the fire expanded by nearly 2,000 acres, primarily on the eastern side near Aetna Springs Road.

“The fire is burning in rugged terrain, and the weather forecast for the next few days includes continued hot and dry conditions, which will make sustained efforts crucial for containment,” Cal Fire said in its Sunday incident report.

Firefighters Focus on Protecting Homes and Wineries

Over 1,200 personnel are battling the flames with air and ground support, prioritizing structure protection in high-risk areas such as Butts Canyon Road and Aetna Springs Road.

“Firefighters will be actively engaged in protecting homes and other structures, particularly in areas like Aetna Springs Road and Butts Canyon Road, where the fire has been active,” Cal Fire stated.

No homes have been confirmed damaged or destroyed so far. Authorities noted that crews are drawing on lessons from the 2020 Glass Fire, which devastated the same region.

The cause of the Pickett Fire remains under investigation.

Extreme Heat and Dry Lightning Increase Risk

Temperatures in Calistoga have exceeded 90°F, adding to the challenges posed by rugged terrain and bone-dry vegetation. The National Weather Service has warned of dry lightning and thunderstorms, which could spark additional wildfires or worsen existing ones.

Evacuations and Vineyard Threats

Mandatory evacuation orders remain for rural communities near the fire zone. Several world-famous vineyards and wineries in Napa Valley are under threat as flames approach the western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains.

Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, Cal Fire warns that more fires are expected as the heatwave continues.
