    Canyon Fire Near Piru Sparks Evacuations in Val Verde

    A fast-moving brush fire dubbed the “Canyon Fire” erupted Thursday afternoon in the Val Verde area of Santa Clarita, rapidly spreading and triggering evacuation warnings across multiple zones in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

    Canyon Fire Location and Size

    The fire broke out on the 6700 block of Holser Canyon Road near Piru, southeast of Lake Piru, and has already scorched over 600 acres, according to initial estimates. Firefighters are actively working to contain the flames as it push east toward Los Angeles County.

    Evacuation Orders in Ventura County

    Level 3 Warning (Mandatory Evacuation):

    • Residents immediately north and south of Lake Piru have been ordered to evacuate without delay under a Level 3 evacuation warning.

    Level 2 Warning (Be Prepared to Leave):

    • Areas further north and south of Lake Piru have been placed under a Level 2 evacuation warning, advising residents to prepare for possible evacuation.

    Evacuation Orders in Los Angeles County

    The eastern flank of the Canyon Fire is impacting areas in western L.A. County, where the following evacuation notices have been issued:

    Level 3 Warning (Mandatory Evacuation):

    • Oaks Canyon and Val Verde are under Level 3 evacuation orders, requiring residents to leave immediately.

    Level 2 Warning (Be Prepared to Leave):

    • Hasley and Romero have been issued Level 2 evacuation warnings, urging residents to stay alert and be ready to leave.

    Massive Firefighting Response Underway

    Local and state firefighting agencies have launched a major response operation in both counties. According to radio dispatches, additional resources have been requested to combat the fire’s rapid spread.

    The response includes:

    • 5 Type 3 engine strike teams (25 engines total)
    • 3 dozer strike teams (6 bulldozers)
    • 1 hand crew strike team (2 crews)
    • 2 additional Type 1 air tankers for aerial suppression

    “An active fire response is on in both Ventura and Los Angeles counties as the wildfire spreads rapidly east,” officials confirmed.
