Who Was Brent Hinds? Mastodon Co-Founder Dies in Atlanta Motorcycle Crash

Brent Hinds, the former lead guitarist and vocalist of Mastodon, died in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on Thursday at the age of 51.

According to Atlanta Police, Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson when it collided with a BMW SUV whose driver allegedly failed to yield during a left turn. The incident is currently under investigation.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Hinds’ identity.

Mastodon Members Mourn Brent Hinds’ Death

The surviving members of Mastodon issued a heartfelt statement on Instagram:

“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident,” they wrote.

They continued:

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Who Was Brent Hinds? His Life and Legacy

Born in Alabama on January 16, 1974, William Brent Hinds later relocated to Atlanta to pursue music. There, he met Troy Sanders and joined Sanders’ band Four Hour Fogger.

After the band’s breakup, Hinds and Sanders teamed up with Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher to form Mastodon in 2000. That same year, the group recorded their first demo with vocalist Eric Saner, who departed a few months later.

Hinds remained a core member of Mastodon for over 25 years before leaving the band in March 2024. He was known for his innovative guitar work, powerful stage presence, and significant influence on the heavy metal genre.
