Viral ‘Welcome to Afghanistan’ Tourism Promo Urges Americans to Visit

A shocking promotional video is circulating on Taliban-affiliated social media, urging American travelers to visit Afghanistan. Blending dark comedy and military visuals with picturesque scenes of the Afghan countryside, the video opens with a provocative image: five armed Afghan men positioned behind three kneeling, hooded figures, resembling formats used in extremist hostage recordings.

    A Bold Welcome

Abruptly, an Afghan yanks the hood off a grinning Caucasian man who gives a thumbs-up and exclaims, “Welcome to Afghanistan!”

    What Does the Video Show?

The video features various scenes, including a man performing pull-ups on the barrel of a ruined tank and another swimming through a lake while holding an assault rifle. One segment showcases an M4 rifle labeled “Property of US Government,” while an off-camera voice humorously comments, “Oh, it’s not even on safety,” eliciting laughter.

Western visitors are depicted enjoying local cuisine, dressed in traditional Afghan attire, and receiving warm welcomes from the locals. The images aim to project Afghanistan as a challenging yet hospitable destination.

    Influencers and Controversies

American adult star Whitney Wright visited the country and shared photos of herself on Instagram in March, displaying her Afghan attire and posing with a rifle at various tourist spots.

Some Afghan citizens criticized the Taliban for allowing her visit while denying local women access to employment, education, and participation in public life. One citizen remarked, “This is fundamentally hypocritical.”

    Ongoing Travel Warnings

Despite attempts to reshape Afghanistan’s global image, Western governments continue to advise against travel to the country. The US State Department has issued a Level Four “Do Not Travel” advisory for Afghanistan due to risks associated with terrorism, crime, and kidnapping. Following the events of 2021, the US embassy in Kabul closed, ending consular support for Americans in the region.

Similarly, the UK Foreign Office advises its citizens to avoid traveling to Afghanistan, citing ongoing civil unrest and safety concerns.
