Veterans Day 2025: Banks, Schools & Mail Schedule

Veterans Day 2025, a federal holiday honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, falls on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The holiday is observed annually on November 11, marking the anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918.

While many Americans will take time to reflect and pay tribute to veterans, most businesses and essential services are expected to operate on regular schedules.

Impact of the Federal Government Shutdown

This year’s observance takes place amid an ongoing federal government shutdown, leading to the cancellation or scaling back of several Veterans Day parades and ceremonies nationwide.

However, major commemorations such as the annual observance at Arlington National Cemetery and the New York City Veterans Day Parade are still scheduled to proceed as planned.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the holiday honors “America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

What’s Open and Closed on Veterans Day 2025

Post Offices and Mail Delivery

All U.S. Postal Service (USPS) offices will be closed on Veterans Day. There will be no regular mail delivery or pickup.

Banks

Major banks — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, CitiBank, Capital One, PNC, and Truist — will be closed on Tuesday in observance of the holiday. However, online banking services and ATMs will remain available for customers.

Stock Market

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will remain open, as Veterans Day is not a market holiday.

Schools and Government Offices

Most public schools and federal, state, and local government offices will be closed for the day.
Some private schools and universities may stay open or operate on modified schedules.

Shipping Services

  • UPS pickup and delivery will operate as usual, but UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations could experience one-day delays due to the postal holiday.
  • UPS Store locations will remain open.
  • FedEx will continue normal pickup, delivery, and FedEx Office operations without interruption.

National Parks and Recreation

National Parks across the U.S. will be open and offering free admission to visitors in honor of Veterans Day. However, due to the ongoing government shutdown, some parks may experience limited staffing, cleanliness, and maintenance issues.

Stores and Restaurants

Most grocery stores, retail shops, and restaurants will be open, though some locations may operate on reduced hours. It’s best to check local schedules before visiting.

Why Veterans Day Falls on November 11

Veterans Day originated from the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Initially known as Armistice Day, it became a federal holiday in 1938. After World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all American veterans who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

Despite the disruptions from the government shutdown, Americans across the country are expected to pause on November 11 to honor the bravery and sacrifice of all who have served the United States.
