Who Was Didarul Islam?
Didarul Islam was a veteran officer with three and a half years of service, assigned to the 47th precinct at just 36 years old. A Bangladeshi immigrant, he was a dedicated family man, with his wife currently eight months pregnant with their third child. The NYPD police chief confirmed that Islam had two children.
Mayor Eric Adams described him as a person of faith, calling him a “true blue New Yorker.”
“He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Jessica S. Tisch, commissioner of the NYPD. “Officer Islam put himself in harm’s way and was shot in cold blood. He was wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city,” she added, highlighting his commitment to public service.
“He died as he lived – a hero,” Tisch concluded.
Community Tribute and Support
Tributes began pouring in for Officer Islam. The Queens Shomrim, a volunteer organization, stated, “Queens Shomrim sends heartfelt condolences and support to the family, friends, and fellow officers of Officer Didarul Islam of the 47th Precinct. He made the ultimate sacrifice of keeping all of us safe while in the line of duty. We stand with the NYPD and the community during this difficult time.”
Islam joined the force in December 2021 and was off-duty during the incident, working as security for the Rudin Management Company, though he was still in uniform.
At a press conference following the shooting, it was shared that Officer Islam was hardworking and took pride in wearing his uniform. He regularly worked overtime to provide for his family, demonstrating his dedication to both his job and loved ones.
