Payson Shooting: SR-87 Closed Amid Police Response

Northbound lanes of State Route 87 in Payson, Arizona, have reopened after an overnight closure caused by a reported shooting and law enforcement response. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) confirmed the reopening early Saturday but has not released additional details.

Closure Details

The shutdown began shortly after midnight near milepost 252 at Frontier Street, affecting northbound traffic. Southbound lanes remained open during the incident. ADOT advised drivers to use alternate routes until the highway was cleared.

Unconfirmed Reports and Limited Updates

Neither the Payson Police Department nor the Gila County Sheriff’s Office has issued an official statement. Local social media posts suggested the possibility of an armed confrontation or a suspect fleeing the area, but these reports remain unverified.

One Facebook post claimed “one dead, suspect in custody,” though Times Now could not confirm this information. As of Saturday morning, no injuries, arrests, or suspect descriptions have been officially confirmed.

Past Incidents on SR-87

This is not the first time SR-87 has faced such disruptions. In 2022, shots were reportedly fired at vehicles near milepost 264, though no injuries occurred. That case, like the current situation, sparked confusion due to limited law enforcement communication.

Community Concerns and Police Activity

Residents near Frontier Street reported visible police activity, including blockades and law enforcement vehicles during the closure. The lack of updates has fueled community concerns about public safety and transparency in the Payson area.

The region has seen multiple firearm-related incidents in recent years, from deputy-involved shootings to accidental discharges, adding to local anxiety.

What’s Next?

Authorities are expected to release updates as the investigation continues. Travelers are advised to check ADOT’s 511 service or AZ511.gov for real-time highway conditions.

For local updates, residents can contact the Payson Police Department at (928) 474-5177.
