Election Day 2025 Voting Hours: State-by-State Guide

Millions of Americans are preparing to vote this Election Day, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, as polling stations across the nation open for key state and local elections.

While this is not a presidential election year, voters will decide on several high-stakes governor’s races, mayoral contests, and local ballot measures that could shape the political landscape heading into 2026.

Election Day Polling Hours Vary by State

Poll opening and closing times differ across the country, depending on state — and in some areas, even by county or municipality.

Most states open polls at 7:00 a.m. local time, though some begin as early as 5:00 a.m., while others open later in the morning.

Here’s a breakdown of when polls open and close on Election Day 2025.

States Opening Polls at 6:00 a.m.

Voters in the following states can begin casting ballots at 6:00 a.m. local time: Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia.

Later Poll Openings

In Arkansas, polls open at 7:30 a.m., while Idaho and parts of Nebraska (Central Time) begin voting at 8:00 a.m.

Some states offer local discretion on opening times. For example:

  • New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Washington allow local authorities to set polling hours.
  • North Dakota permits polls to open between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
  • Vermont allows openings between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

What Time Do Polls Close?

Voters are encouraged to check their local election office websites for the most accurate polling times and locations, as some areas may experience schedule adjustments or extended hours due to weather or technical delays.
