Trump Calls Iran’s Counter-Proposal “Garbage” — Ceasefire Is on “Massive Life Support”

After 73 days of war and 10 weeks of the Strait of Hormuz blocked, Iran finally submitted its formal counter-proposal to the US via Pakistani mediators on Sunday. Within hours, Trump had called it “garbage” and declared the ceasefire to be on “massive life support.”

The diplomatic track that the entire world had been watching — the one-page MOU that was supposed to end the war before Trump’s China trip — has entered its most dangerous phase.

What Iran’s Counter-Proposal Said

Tehran’s counter-proposal to the United States’ plan to end the conflict included recognition of sovereignty over the blockaded Strait of Hormuz and a demand for compensation for war damages, Iranian state media reported. The proposal demands the release of frozen Iranian assets as well as the lifting of sanctions.

Iran is also seeking an end to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon. Iranian state media reports on the counter-proposal so far did not mention anything about the country’s nuclear program.

In its response to the latest U.S. proposal, Tehran has insisted on war reparations, full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, an end to sanctions, and the release of frozen assets.

The absence of any nuclear language in Iran’s counter-proposal is the element that triggered Trump’s rejection. The entire US MOU framework was built on the premise that the 30-day negotiating period would address Iran’s nuclear programme — 12-15 year enrichment moratorium, snap IAEA inspections, surrender of 440kg of 60%-enriched uranium.

Iran’s response contains none of that. What it contains instead is a maximalist assertion of Iranian sovereignty over the world’s most important oil shipping lane and a demand for financial compensation for the war the US and Israel launched.

What Trump Said

“I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday.

President Donald Trump said Monday that the U.S. ceasefire with Iran was “on life support” after he received what he called Tehran’s “garbage” response to a U.S. proposal for ending the war. “It’s unbelievably weak,” Trump said of the Iranian reply. “After reading that piece of garbage they sent, I didn’t even finish reading it.”

“Didn’t even finish reading it.” That phrase — from Trump — signals the most serious diplomatic breakdown since Islamabad round one collapsed on April 12. Every previous Trump rejection has been followed by a Pakistan intervention and a de-escalation. The question now is whether Pakistan, Oman, China or any other mediating actor can produce a bridge that saves the ceasefire before the “massive life support” declaration becomes a death certificate.

Iran’s Defence of Its Own Proposal

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that its proposal, which state media reported included recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, was “reasonable” and “generous.”

Iran calling its own proposal “reasonable and generous” while Trump calls it garbage is the widest public gap between the two sides since the war began. One possible interpretation: Iran’s IRGC hardliners forced a maximalist counter-proposal that the civilian diplomatic team did not design, and the civilian team — Araghchi, Pezeshkian — is now in the same position it has been throughout the conflict: publicly defending positions it privately knows are untenable.

The Market Response

Brent crude prices on Sunday rose 3.17% to $104.50 a barrel and US crude climbed 3.21%, to about $98.48 a barrel. Peace talks between the US and Iran appear to have stalled again, renewing concerns about when oil would be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

$104.50 Brent. Every percentage point of deal optimism that built over the past two weeks has been reversed in a single Truth Social post.
