Apple Watch With Redesigned Band Connection System Tipped Again

According to the tipster, you may not be able to link your existing Apple Watch bands to the company's next-generation smartwatch.

According to a report, Apple is working on a revamped connector system for its coming Apple Watch generation. The Cupertino company’s rumored next-generation smartwatch is likely to include watch straps coupled via a separate mechanism, rendering old Apple watch bands incompatible with the forthcoming model.

Until now, Apple Watch bands were interchangeable across generations if the same size was used, which meant that users could keep using their watch bands even after upgrading to a newer Apple Watch model.

X (formerly Twitter) user Kosutami (@KosutamiSan) claims in a recent post that the connectors of the next-generation Apple Watch have been “completely redesigned” — the tipster does not specify what mechanism will be used to connect the bands to the watch but claims that Apple chose the new system because the current connector “takes a lot of space.”

It should be noted that this is not the first time that the company’s alleged plans to alter the Apple Watch band connectors have surfaced. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said earlier this year that the “Apple Watch X” would use a magnetic band attachment technology instead of the existing locking mechanism.

The current-generation Apple Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and Watch SE (2022) all have a press-to-release locking mechanism that secures the watch bands. The company has used the same technique for generations, allowing users to use the same bands on their next Apple Watch.

The inclusion of the reported magnetic locking mechanism would suggest that watch bands produced for previous generations would no longer be compatible with the alleged Apple Watch X.

However, it is currently unknown whether Apple will equip its next smartwatch models with next-generation display technology – further information about the rumored smartwatch will be released in the following months.
