Three Firefighters Killed in Colorado Wildfire Burnover — Named as Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson

Three federal wildland firefighters were killed on Saturday when a wildfire overtook their position in western Colorado during initial attack operations, the US Department of the Interior and the US Wildland Fire Service confirmed. The three firefighters, all members of the Rifle Helitack crew, have been identified as Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson. Two other crew members survived the incident and were hospitalised with burn injuries. The deaths are among the deadliest single wildfire incidents for federal firefighters in over a decade.

What Happened

On Saturday, June 27, while working on a wildfire in western Colorado, five federal firefighters were involved in a burnover incident resulting in shelter deployment. Two firefighters are being treated for burn injuries, and three others did not survive. The firefighters were assigned to the Knowles and Gore fires near the Colorado-Utah border when the incident occurred.

The three deceased firefighters have been identified as Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan, assigned to the US Forest Service Rifle Helitack; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona, assigned to the US Forest Service Kaibab National Forest; and Sydney Watson, 27, of Warrior, Alabama, assigned to the US Wildland Fire Service Rifle Helitack.

A burnover occurs when firefighters are overtaken by a fire that changes direction or accelerates faster than expected, forcing them to deploy emergency fire shelters — reflective foil tents designed to protect firefighters from radiant heat — as a last resort. Even with shelter deployment, burnover incidents carry a high fatality risk, particularly under conditions of extreme heat, low humidity and high winds.

The Conditions That Made It Deadly

Temperatures in Grand Junction hit a high of 93 degrees Fahrenheit, with winds gusting to 44 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Fuel moisture readings between 2% and 8% were recorded by firefighting crews working in the same region — conditions that turn grass, brush and timber into near-instant fuel once ignited.

A spokesperson assigned to the Cottonwood Fire in the same region told NPR that crews were dealing with single-digit humidity and wind gusts of around 45 miles per hour, on top of fuel moisture readings between 2% and 8%. Those conditions grounded helicopters and other firefighting aircraft on Friday afternoon and again briefly on Saturday. The terrain has compounded the challenge, with steep cliffs and canyon walls making it hard to move heavy equipment and engines into position.

These are conditions in which fire behaviour becomes unpredictable and extremely difficult to anticipate. Wind-driven fires can change direction rapidly, overtaking positions that appeared safe moments earlier. The combination of single-digit humidity and high fuel loads means fires can travel at speeds that outpace foot movement.

The Fire That Killed Them

The Knowles and Gore fires merged with the Snyder Mesa Fire to form the Snyder Fire, now estimated at over 28,000 acres along the Colorado-Utah border. An interagency complex incident management team has assumed command of the Snyder Fire.

The Snyder Fire began as the Snyder Mesa Fire on Saturday in eastern Utah’s Grand County and later combined with the smaller Jones and Knowles fires in Colorado. It has burned approximately 44 square miles of terrain.

The Knowles and Gore fires were part of a broader regional fire emergency that has seen multiple large blazes burning simultaneously across Utah, Colorado and Arizona — driven by the same combination of record warmth, drought, low humidity and high winds that produced the record-setting Cottonwood Fire in southern Utah.

The Broader Fire Emergency

Fires in Utah, Colorado and Arizona have been intensifying, thanks to days of low humidity, high temperatures and strong winds. The Cottonwood Fire in Beaver County, Utah — the largest active wildfire in the country — has burned over 92,000 acres and remains at 0% containment.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the situation on the ground as grimmer than anything he had seen before, while crediting crews with pulling off some improbable rescues in the face of such difficult conditions.

The deaths of Barker, Hutcherson and Watson occur against a backdrop of a 2026 fire season that has already burned more acres nationally than any year since 2020, and has produced conditions — in terms of temperature, humidity and wind — that fire management experts say are structurally more dangerous than anything firefighters faced a generation ago.

What the Wildland Fire Service Said

US Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy said: “We mourn the loss of three firefighters who answered the call to protect others and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow citizens. Our thoughts are with their families, loved ones, friends and crewmates as they face an unimaginable loss. These firefighters embodied the courage, professionalism and selflessness that define the wildland fire service.”

Agriculture Secretary said: “This is terrible news and a reminder of what our first responders risk every time they go out to prevent devastation and protect Americans from natural disasters.”

Emily Barker was 38. Nick Hutcherson was 27. Sydney Watson was 27. They died doing what wildland firefighters do in the most dangerous conditions the American West has produced in years — putting themselves between a fire and the landscape and communities they were sworn to protect.
