7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Philippines Coast

A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, triggering a tsunami warning and widespread concern across the region. Authorities have also cautioned residents about potential aftershocks following the massive tremor.

Epicenter and Tsunami Threat

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located 20 km east of Santiago, a town with a population of approximately 2,631 people.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that the quake was offshore and at a depth of 20 km, sparking immediate tsunami alerts across coastal provinces.

“This is the second earthquake of this magnitude to strike the country within two weeks,” officials stated.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued an alert, warning that hazardous tsunami waves could impact coasts within 300 km of the epicenter.

Earlier Quake’s Devastation Still Fresh

This latest quake follows the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu province on September 30, claiming 74 lives and injuring 559 people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). That tremor also affected 189,000 families, damaging homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

Tsunami Timeline and Safety Advisory

Phivolcs reported that the first tsunami waves were expected to arrive between 09:43:54 and 11:43:54 AM (PST) on October 10, 2025. “These waves may continue for hours,” the agency warned.

“Based on the local tsunami scenario database, it is expected to experience wave heights of more than one meter above the normal tides and may be higher on enclosed bays and straits,” the department said.

Government Response and Rescue Efforts

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured the public that authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

“We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it,” Marcos said.

Emergency teams have been deployed across affected areas, and search and rescue operations are underway.

In Davao del Norte, Governor Edwin Jubahib told Bloomberg that infrastructural damage has been reported as they continue to assess the situation.
Ednar Dayanghirang, regional director of the Office of Civil Defense, confirmed reports of damaged buildings and a church in Davao Oriental.

Impact on Communities

In Davao City, where over 5.4 million residents live, schools were evacuated as tremors shook buildings. The city lies roughly 250 kilometers west of Davao Oriental province, one of the areas closest to the epicenter.

Residents across coastal Mindanao have been urged to move to open spaces or higher ground for safety. Local authorities are advising people to remain alert and avoid returning to damaged structures until inspections are complete.

Regional Warnings and Aftershocks

Neighboring Indonesia also issued tsunami warnings for North Sulawesi and Papua regions, anticipating waves as high as 50 centimeters (20 inches), according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Phivolcs has recorded multiple aftershocks following the major quake and continues to monitor seismic activity in the region.

Previous Earthquake in Cebu

Just a week earlier, Cebu province was struck by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, killing at least 74 people and injuring many others. The quake also destroyed the historic Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle in Bantayan, a centuries-old church that crumbled under the intense tremors.
