WhatsApp Announces ‘View Once’ Voice Messages

In 2021, WhatsApp released View Once messaging for text, images, and videos. This feature is now being expanded to voice messages on the Meta-owned instant messaging platform. Users will be able to configure audio messages to disappear after their recipient has listened to them using this functionality.

View Once voice messages, like View Once photos and videos, will be marked with the “one-time” icon and can only be played once. View Once voice messages will be delivered to users worldwide in the coming days.

Meta announced the debut of View Once voice messages in a blog post on Thursday (December 7). Users can use the feature to send a voice message that will disappear once the receiver has listened to it.

This feature is great for sharing sensitive information, planning surprises, and transferring personal information such as credit card numbers and streaming app credentials without fear of them being recorded or shared. View Once audio messages will be identified by the “one-time” icon and can only be played once.

According to WhatsApp, View Once is an example of the company’s ongoing privacy innovation. WhatsApp’s disappearing voice messages, like the self-destructing photos and videos, are said to be protected by end-to-end encryption by default. The View Once voice messages will be sent globally in the coming days.

How to send a View Once voice message on WhatsApp

  • Open a chat window on WhatsApp.
  • Tap and hold on the microphone icon in the bottom-right corner.
  • Swipe up to lock the recording Tap on and hold the record.
  • Tap the stylized View Once icon.

The voice message will be removed from the chat when the receiver hears the voice clip. It will be replaced with the text “opened”. If the recipient does not open the View Once messages within 14 days of sending them, they will be deleted from the conversation. Furthermore, once media is enabled, users cannot forward, save, star, or share voice messages sent or received with view.
