Google demonstrated that it is possible to provide extended reality experience using a wearable device that resembles a pair of spectacles.

Google recently demonstrated a set of extended reality (XR) glasses at the ongoing TED 2025 conference in Vancouver. While Apple and Samsung have already released mixed reality headsets (Apple Vision Pro and Project Moohan), Meta, Google, Apple, Samsung, and Snapchat are working on lighter XR eyewear that resemble eyeglasses. The new Google XR glasses prototype connects to a smartphone and can perform activities such as real-time translation and scenario analysis using a ‘Memory’ feature.

On the second day of the TED 2025 conference, Shahram Izadi, Google’s Vice President and General Manager of XR, delivered a presentation while wearing a pair of XR glasses that resembled Meta’s Project Orion prototype from last year. The executive reportedly informed the crowd that he was examining the notes for his speech on the smart glasses’ display.

Izadi was joined by a colleague, who also wore a pair of smart glasses, to demonstrate some of the device’s features. This included creating a haiku about the audience, translating the text into several languages, recognizing music, and playing it on a connected smartphone using the YouTube Music app.

Google’s XR glasses prototype also has a useful feature called ‘Memory’. As the name implies, this feature enables the smart glasses to recall numerous objects it has “seen” through the built-in camera and respond to user queries about those.

The XR glasses are linked to a smartphone to limit the amount of processing going place on the device and make it lightweight. Content is streamed to the handset, and information is relayed back and displayed. This also minimizes the power consumption of the XR headset.

The company previously announced that it is already developing smart glasses after launching Android XR, a new operating system for wearables. Samsung’s first mixed reality headset running Android XR is slated to be released this year, along with a pair of XR glasses, while Google has already showcased wearable XR glasses that connect to a smartphone.

Google has yet to disclose plans to release a commercial version of these smart glasses, and it may be several years before the company offers an XR headset. Meta could debut a pair of smart glasses based on its Orion prototype by 2027, and other companies may follow suit in the years to come.
