Car Crash Kills 3 Qatari Envoys Near Gaza Peace Summit

Three Qatari diplomats were killed in a tragic car crash on Saturday while traveling to Egypt’s Red Sea resort city, Sharm el-Sheikh. According to local reports, their vehicle overturned about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city, leaving two other diplomats injured.

The victims were members of Qatar’s protocol team, on their way to attend a high-level summit on the Gaza ceasefire. The summit aims to celebrate the new truce between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, as reported by the Associated Press.

Summit to Discuss Gaza Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange

The upcoming Gaza ceasefire summit in Sharm el-Sheikh will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

More than two dozen world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, are expected to attend the event.

The summit follows Qatar’s role in mediating the ceasefire, with support from Egypt, the U.S., and Turkey, which joined the talks earlier this month. The negotiations led to both a truce and the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas to Begin Hostage Release in Gaza

In a related development, Hamas announced that the release of 48 hostages held by Palestinian militants in Gaza will begin Monday morning. This marks the first phase of a prisoner exchange deal mediated by the United States.

Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official, told AFP: “According to the signed agreement, the prisoner exchange is set to begin on Monday morning as agreed, and there are no new developments on this matter.”

Hamdan added that militants on the ground have not yet informed Hamas leadership about the detailed logistics of the handover. He also confirmed that Hamas’s prisoners office is still in talks with Israel to finalize the list of Palestinian detainees to be released.
