Oscar-Nominated Actress Diane Ladd Dies at 89

Renowned actress Diane Ladd, whose remarkable career spanned more than six decades, has passed away at her home in Ojai, California, at the age of 89.

Her daughter, Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional statement shared on Monday.

“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother passed with me beside her this morning at her home in Ojai, California. She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

A Legendary Career Spanning Six Decades

Born Rose Diane Ladner on November 29, 1935, in Laurel, Mississippi, Diane Ladd began her artistic journey on stage before moving into television and film during the 1950s.

She made early appearances in classic TV series including The Big Story, Perry Mason, Decoy, Naked City, and Hazel, setting the foundation for a lifelong acting career defined by range and resilience.

Diane Ladd’s Breakthrough Role and Academy Award Nominations

Ladd’s breakout came with her unforgettable role as Flo in Martin Scorsese’s 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her sharp-witted performance earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She received two additional Oscar nominations for David Lynch’s Wild at Heart (1990) and Rambling Rose (1991) — the latter co-starring her daughter Laura Dern, making them one of the few mother-daughter pairs ever nominated in the same year.

Diane Ladd’s Most Memorable Movies and TV Shows

Throughout her extensive career, Diane Ladd continued to captivate audiences with memorable performances across film and television.

Notable film roles include:

  • Citizen Ruth (1996)
  • Primary Colors (1998)
  • 28 Days (2000)
  • Inland Empire (2006)
  • Joy (2015)
  • I Dream Too Much (2016)

On television, she earned acclaim for roles in Touched by an Angel, NCIS: New Orleans, and HBO’s Enlightened(2011–2013), once again playing the mother of Laura Dern — a performance that earned her an Emmy nomination.

She also portrayed Nell O’Brien in the Hallmark Channel drama Chesapeake Shores from 2016 to 2019.

Author, Survivor, and Creative Force

Beyond her acting career, Diane Ladd was a writer, director, and producer, celebrated for her wit, empathy, and deep Southern roots.

In 2023, she co-authored the memoir Honey, Baby, Mine with Laura Dern, chronicling their healing walks together following Ladd’s near-fatal lung illness in 2018. Doctors had given her only months to live, but she made a remarkable recovery.

Family, Life, and Legacy

Ladd married actor Bruce Dern in 1960, and the couple had two daughters — Laura Dern and Diane Elizabeth Dern, who tragically passed away in 1962 at just 18 months old. The couple divorced in 1969.

Over the course of more than 200 film and television credits, Diane Ladd built a legacy defined by strength, grace, and authenticity. Her performances brought depth and humanity to every role, making her one of Hollywood’s most respected and beloved figures.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Dern, and her grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will remain private.
