A TSA employee at Tampa International Airport was inadvertently recorded on a hot mic ahead of a scheduled press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Monday. The audio, shared on X by reporter Alexander Willis, captured the agent discussing his early career fears and workplace dynamics.
In the recording, the TSA agent described being intimidated by a former colleague during his time in human resources, stating: “I used to be terrified of [her] when I started in HR, I was so scared of her.”
He went on to explain, “She was just really busy; she did, like, discipline stuff in HR, so being an officer, she didn’t trust me to be around any of it because she didn’t know if I had a big mouth or not.”
The colleague mentioned in the remarks was not identified.
TSA Agents Discuss Work Schedules on Hot Mic
The audio also captured a casual conversation between the agent and another staff member about work schedules.
“Now you can no longer go to the store,” one person said, while another added, “I wish I had Sunday-Monday or Friday-Saturday [off], because having both weekend days off is great, but it’s frustrating sometimes.”
Kristi Noem Honors TSA Employees With $10,000 Awards
Secretary Kristi Noem was in Tampa to present $10,000 bonus awards to more than a dozen TSA employees who continued working without pay during the recent federal government shutdown — the longest in U.S. history, ending on November 12.
During the shutdown, TSA workers were deemed essential employees, receiving only a partial paycheck at the start of October before working several weeks without pay.
Similar to a previous event in Las Vegas, the bonus checks handed out on stage were symbolic envelopes, with Noem explaining that the funds would be added to the recipients’ next paychecks via direct deposit. Only TSA employees nominated by supervisors for “exemplary service” were selected.
TSA Workforce and Recognition Efforts
The TSA employs over 50,000 transportation security officers out of a total workforce of approximately 65,000 employees. The bonus awards, though symbolic at the event, represent a broader effort by Kristi Noem to acknowledge the strain placed on essential workers during the government shutdown.
The hot-mic incident did not disrupt the event, but the candid comments have drawn attention online as the video continues to circulate.
