YouTube Reportedly Rolling Out 8K Support on the Meta Quest

According to reports, YouTube has released a new version of its app for the Meta Quest. Users of the mixed reality headset can now apparently watch YouTube videos in 8K resolution. However, HDR videos are rumored to not support 8K and will only be available at 4K quality.

This feature was apparently included in a recent upgrade to YouTube’s app for the Meta Quest interface. Notably, the video-streaming platform recently said that it will start taking necessary action against third-party apps that block advertisements.

Android Central reports that the latest version 1.54 of the YouTube for Meta Quest app now supports 8K quality (7680 × 4320p). The function was found on the Meta Quest 3, which debuted in October 2023. Interestingly, the Meta Quest 3 display uses 4K LCD panels with a resolution of 2064 x 220p per eye. It’s uncertain if viewers will be able to distinguish between 4K and 8K video quality on the mixed reality headset.

According to the report, users only need to be on the upgraded app to get the capabilities. When they enter the VR app, they may search for 8K content. According to the report, once it begins playing, pressing the settings symbol at the bottom of the player will reveal the option to alter quality. The 4320p option is claimed to play the video in 8K resolution.

However, HDR videos on the Quest 3 apparently do not support 8K quality yet, so they will be limited to 4K resolution. Interestingly, as long as the video is of SDR quality, users can also view 360-degree content in 8K.

YouTube is also actively cracking down on third-party apps that block advertisements. In a recent announcement, the company stated that it will begin taking necessary action against apps that use its API and provide such services, as this violates the company’s Terms of Service.

It also warned users who use these third-party apps that they may encounter buffering issues or receive the error message “The following content is not available on this app” when attempting to watch a video.
