The US Air Force has updated its uniform and appearance rules for Airmen serving worldwide. Key changes include banning eyelash extensions and requiring officers to keep a full set of camouflage uniforms. Higher combat boots are now also part of the updated standards.
According to Task & Purpose, the Air Force announced four major updates to dress and appearance policies.
New US Air Force Uniform Standards: Key Points
A new guidance memo for DAFI 36-2903 outlines the changes. It removes approval for sneaker-style boots and eyelash extensions. It also requires all officers to maintain at least one full set of Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniforms.
The Air Force clarified in a July 10 release that these updates only apply to Airmen. The US Space Force will issue its own guidance in the coming weeks.
Boot Height Requirements
One of the major updates is a new height rule for combat boots.
“Combat boots must now be between 8-12 inches in height from the bottom of the heel tread to the top of the back of the boot, and soling material will not exceed two inches in height,” the Air Force stated.
Eyelash Extensions Banned
The new rules officially ban the use of eyelash extensions.
Exceptions will only be given for medical conditions, the memo states.
Even after obtaining medical authorization as well as being documented on an AF Form 469, the eyelash extensions must not exceed 12 mm in length. The Airmen will be required to comply with the new extension standard no later than 30 days from the date of the guidance memorandum.
OCP Uniform Rule for All Officers
All US Air Force officers, regardless of their role, must now keep at least one complete set of non-fire-retardant OCPs or improved hot weather combat uniforms. Airmen have 90 days to comply with the updated uniform and boot rules.
The memo also explains how sleeves should be handled:
“Cuffs may remain visible, or members may fold their sleeves once or twice,” it stated.
According to Stars and Stripes, these changes do not apply to US Space Force guardians, who will receive separate guidance soon.
