Two adults from Rome, Georgia, were killed, and seven children were injured after two ATVs collided on a trail at Indian Mountain ATV Park in Piedmont, Alabama, on Saturday, August 30. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident in a Facebook post.
According to reports, the tragedy occurred when an ATV carrying nine occupants collided with another ATV with two riders, causing one to overturn and strike a tree.
Emergency Response and Casualties
The Cherokee County 911 center received multiple reports of “a serious ATV accident” at 3:47 PM. One of the drivers died on the scene, while an adult female and three children were rushed to trauma centers in Birmingham. Unfortunately, the adult female later succumbed to her injuries, as per the joint press release from the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, Sheriff’s Office, and Coroner’s Office.
Additionally, four other children were taken to Atrium-Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia, for treatment. The seven injured children were between the ages of 1 and 12, officials said. Both adults who died were residents of Rome, Georgia.
Officials Urge ATV Safety After Fatal Crash
“This is a tragic accident and highlights the importance of operating RZRs and other recreational vehicles in a safe and responsible manner,” Sheriff Shaver said in the press release.
“Always wear your restraint system and never exceed the number of passengers your vehicle is designed for,” added EMA Director Shawn Rogers.
Coroner McDonald also emphasized: “Incidents like this are always difficult, especially when children are involved. Please do everything you can to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, given the sensitivity of the situation. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office are conducting a thorough investigation into the fatal collision.
