NWS Issues Heat Advisory for Southern California

The National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a heat advisory for parts of Southern California, including Los Angeles and Ventura counties, effective Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Areas Affected

The advisory covers:

  • Ventura County Beaches
  • Ventura County Inland Coast
  • Central Ventura County Valleys
  • Malibu Coast
  • Los Angeles
  • Palos Verdes Hills
  • Santa Monica Mountains recreational areas
  • Calabasas
  • Agoura Hills
  • San Fernando Valley

Temperatures in these areas are expected to reach up to 93 degrees, creating a high risk of heat-related illnesses for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, people without air conditioning, and anyone active outdoors.

Precautions Residents Should Take

During the heat wave, residents are advised to:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
  • Seek shelter in air-conditioned areas whenever possible
  • Check on relatives, neighbors, and vulnerable individuals

It is important to never leave young children or pets alone in vehicles, as temperatures inside cars can rise dangerously fast.

Outdoor activities should be limited or scheduled for cooler times of the day. Residents should be aware of heat exhaustion and heat stroke symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and confusion.

Safety Tips for Outdoor Workers

For those working outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends:

  • Taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
  • Moving anyone showing signs of heat-related illness to a cool, shaded spot immediately
  • Calling 911 if symptoms worsen

Following these precautions can help Southern California residents stay safe during the extreme heat advisory.
