iPhone 16 Series Might Not Offer Faster USB 3 Speeds

Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event unveiled the iPhone 16 series. During the event, the company demonstrated many hardware and software advancements included in the current generation of iPhone handsets.

However, it appears that the company’s words “faster USB 3 speeds” were taken out of context, and the tech giant is not actually offering improved transfer speed with the new lineup of iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The Cupertino-based tech company stated while announcing several changes for the iPhone 16 Pro models that the next generation of Apple handsets will have “faster USB 3 speeds”. However, according to a MacRumors report, this might be confusing phrasing by the company.

Looking at the technical specifications of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, we find that the base and Pro models have USB 2 and USB 3 transfer speeds of 480 Mbps and 10 Gbps, respectively. Interestingly, both the iPhone 15 Pro and non-Pro variants offered the same speeds. If such is the case, there is no substantial improvement in transfer speeds.

It appears that Apple intended to indicate that the iPhone 16 Pro models, which are powered by the A18 Pro chipset, provide better data transfer speeds than the non-Pro variants, which are powered by the A18 SoC.

The claim would be true if the tech giant was comparing the transfer speed of the iPhone 16 Pro to the iPhone 14 Pro, the last iteration with the Lightning cable.

However, those who want to achieve 10 Gbps transfer speeds with the iPhone 16 Pro models would need to purchase the required USB-C cable separately. Notably, USB 3 is the third generation of the Universal Serial Bus standard, providing greater data transfer speeds than the previous versions.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature bigger displays, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screens, respectively. The display also has a 120Hz refresh rate (ProMotion) and can reach 2,000 units of peak brightness.
