‘Death to IDF’ Graffiti, Burnt Cars Spark Hate Crime Probe in St. Louis Suburb

Authorities in Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, are investigating an apparent hate crime after discovering anti-Israel graffiti and several burned vehicles early Tuesday. Among the messages spray-painted on the street was the phrase: “Death to IDF,” referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

Officials have labeled the incident as antisemitic in nature, launching a full investigation.

Arson Suspected as Investigation Unfolds

According to a Clayton Police Department statement, officers responded to reports of a fire around 3 AM on the 7500 block of Westmoreland Avenue.

“We believe the victim in this incident, a Clayton resident, was specifically targeted. There are no indications of any further threat to the community,” the department stated.

Photos shared on social media show multiple heavily damaged and burned vehicles. Investigators suspect the fire was intentionally set, though no injuries were reported.

The FBI and St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit have joined the investigation.

Graffiti and Threats Add to Alarm

Local station KMOV reported that in addition to “Death to IDF,” other graffiti included threats aimed at an unidentified individual.

This has deepened concern among Jewish advocacy groups and civil rights officials.

Officials, Groups Respond to Antisemitic Attack

Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter):

“I’ve been briefed about the reported car bombings in St. Louis and alleged antisemitic vandalism. Our PDAAG @JesusOseteDOJ has been in touch with the US Attorney for EDMo.
Our office intends to hold the perpetrators accountable for these violent acts.”

The watchdog group StopAntisemitism also condemned the incident:

“StopAntisemitism is outraged by the vile arson attack targeting the family of a lone IDF soldier in Clayton, Missouri. This is a clear act of antisemitic hate meant to intimidate and terrorize. We demand that those responsible be swiftly identified & prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Ongoing Federal Hate Crime Investigation

The case is now under active investigation as a federal hate crime, with assistance from multiple agencies. While no arrests have been made, local and federal officials are working together to identify those responsible.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Clayton Police Department or the FBI field office in St. Louis.
