Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Anas Al-Sharif was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent in Gaza City, just minutes after sharing footage of the ongoing bombardment on X.

His final post read: “Relentless bombardment. For two hours, the Israeli aggression has intensified on Gaza City.”

Strike Outside Al-Shifa Hospital

According to Al Jazeera, the 28-year-old reporter died when a tent used by journalists outside the main gate of al-Shifa Hospital was hit in an Israeli raid.

The Israeli military claimed Al-Sharif was part of Hamas:

“Anas Al Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops,” the statement read.

A Career in Journalism

Anas Al-Sharif was a respected Gaza-based reporter, known for covering northern Gaza for Al Jazeera Arabic. A graduate of the Faculty of Media at Al-Aqsa University, he won the Best Young Journalist Award in Palestine in 2018.

In July, Israeli spokesperson Avichay Adraee shared a video accusing him of being part of Hamas’s armed wing — an allegation Al Jazeera Media Network strongly denied.

Al Jazeera Rejects Accusations

The network issued a statement:

“The network strongly condemns and denounces these relentless efforts, which have consistently incited against its staff since the beginning of its coverage of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. The Network considers this incitement a dangerous attempt to justify the targeting of its journalists in the field.”

International Calls for Protection

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) previously urged the international community to safeguard Al-Sharif.

“This is not the first time Al-Sharif has been targeted by the Israeli military, but the danger to his life is now acute,” said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah.
