Las Vegas Air Quality Worsens: These Areas Report ‘Unhealthy’ AQI Today

Several neighborhoods across Las Vegas, including Downtown, Angel Park, Summerlin North, and Rancho, are experiencing ‘unhealthy’ air quality levels as wildfire smoke continues to blanket the region. On Monday morning, hazy and smoky skies were especially visible across the western part of the valley, causing concern among residents and health officials.

What’s Causing the Poor Air Quality in Las Vegas?

According to environmental officials, the poor air quality in Las Vegas today is largely due to smoke drifting from the Gifford Fire burning near Santa Maria, California. The wildfire smoke has significantly reduced visibility in the Las Vegas Valley and increased PM2.5 levels (fine particulate matter), which poses health risks, especially for sensitive groups.

Las Vegas AQI Hits ‘Unhealthy’ Category

As of 11 a.m. PDT, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) across Las Vegas stood at 184, placing it firmly in the “unhealthy” category, according to data from AirNow.

Here are the worst-hit neighborhoods:

  • Downtown Las Vegas – 184 AQI · Unhealthy
  • Angel Park – 171 AQI · Unhealthy
  • Summerlin North – 167 AQI · Unhealthy
  • Rancho – 165 AQI · Unhealthy

AirNow warns: “Some members of the general public may experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.”

Concerned residents have taken to social media to describe worsening conditions and share how the poor air quality is affecting their day-to-day life:

“Be careful out there Las Vegas, that Grand Canyon fire is filling the air with smoke,” one person posted on Facebook.

“This is smoke, you can’t see the mountains — our air quality is bad here in Vegas. We need some wind — can I request a lake wind from WI/MN please — to blow it out of the Valley,” another wrote.

A local added, “It is smoky out there, Vegas peeps, worse now than early this morning (I can even smell it now). If you’re elderly or have respiratory issues, please consider staying indoors as much as possible. The usual strip view is completely smoky.”

“Unbelievable! This is the air quality in Las Vegas today! No wonder I felt so stuffy and having a hard time breathing this morning! Yikes!” said another concerned resident.

Health Tips During Unhealthy AQI Days

If you’re in Las Vegas and experiencing symptoms like coughing, congestion, or shortness of breath, health officials recommend:

  • Limiting outdoor activity, especially for children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues
  • Keeping windows and doors closed
  • Running air purifiers or using high-quality masks outdoors
  • Monitoring AQI updates via trusted sources
