Trump Gives Russia 50-day Deadline on Ukraine War

US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Russia on Monday, urging for the resolution of its ongoing war with Ukraine. Trump articulated his concerns during a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte at the White House, expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation.

Tariffs on the Table

Trump indicated that if there is no agreement on the conflict within 50 days, he would impose “severe tariffs” on Russian trade. He stated:

“…if we don’t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent.”

These would be “secondary tariffs” targeting Russia’s remaining trade partners.

Frustration with Putin

The comments reflect Trump’s growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly as Russia has intensified its drone attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. Trump remarked:

“I don’t want to say he’s an assassin, but he’s a tough guy.”

Previously, Trump had hinted at making a “major statement” regarding Russia, signaling heightened concern over the escalating conflict.

Diplomatic Movements

In related news, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, is reported to have reached Kyiv, according to a senior Ukrainian official. Trump confirmed the US’s commitment to supplying Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine to counter Russian aerial assaults. He mentioned that the European Union would be financially responsible for various sophisticated weaponry being sent to Ukraine.

Shifting Relations with Putin

Historically, Trump’s relationship with Putin has been characterized as friendly, with Putin asserting that Russia was prepared to negotiate for peace. However, Trump has previously labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections.” Recently, amid ongoing Russian attacks on civilian areas, Trump took to social media to criticize Putin, stating:

“Putin has gone absolutely CRAZY!”

He expressed disappointment in Putin’s actions, claiming:

“I thought he was somebody that meant what he said. He’ll talk so beautifully and then he’ll bomb people at night. We don’t like that.”
