Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered one of her clearest messages yet on migration and cultural integration, telling international leaders that anyone choosing to live in a foreign country must respect its laws, culture and traditions.
Speaking before the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Meloni said her remarks were not “radical” but simply “common sense,” emphasizing that cultural respect is essential to social stability across Europe.

Meloni Warns of Threats to European Identity
Meloni highlighted what she described as growing challenges facing European societies—not only from irregular migration, but also from radical ideologies that, in her view, resist integration and threaten the cohesion of the West.
She pointed to values such as family, Christianity and national sovereignty as core pillars of European identity, claiming they have come under pressure from both extremist movements and political trends on the left.
According to Meloni, these pressures have weakened cultural confidence and made it harder for European nations to maintain unity.
‘Integration Is Adaptation by the Newcomer’
The prime minister stressed that integration must not require a host society to “reshape” itself, but should instead involve newcomers adapting to the existing norms of the country they enter.
Meloni argued that cultural cohesion is necessary for peaceful coexistence: “A society that forgets who it is cannot offer stability.”
She added that Europe must draw a distinction between secure borders and isolationism, saying she is not calling for “walls,” but for immigration systems that ensure respect for national values.
Cooperation With Arab Nations, but With Clear Principles
Meloni also called for stronger partnerships with Arab countries, emphasizing that cooperation should be constructive but rooted in clear expectations regarding identity, culture and respect for sovereignty.
She reiterated that a nation that abandons its identity risks its future, insisting that European leaders must speak openly about these issues rather than avoid them.
