Category 4 Hurricane Melissa Threatens Jamaica & Haiti

Hurricane Melissa has strengthened into a Category 4 storm, causing alarm across the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center reports that the storm is undergoing “extreme rapid intensification,” posing serious risks to Jamaica, Haiti, and surrounding regions.

Melissa’s Threat to Jamaica and Haiti

The Weather Channel warns that Hurricane Melissa could reach Category 5 intensity. Jamaica is expected to face heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and destructive winds lasting several days. Haiti is also in the storm’s path, likely to experience severe weather.

The National Hurricane Center predicts “extensive infrastructural damage, long-duration power and communication outages, and potentially prolonged isolation of communities,” according to The Weather Channel.

Melissa’s Path and Progress

Melissa escalated from a tropical storm to Category 3 hurricane in just 12 hours on Saturday. By Sunday, it became a Category 4 hurricane, with predictions of up to 40 inches of rainfall in Jamaica and Hispaniola through Wednesday.

The hurricane’s center is currently 100 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, moving at a slow pace of five miles per hour, which is intensifying the storm’s power.

Forecast and Expected Landfall

According to AccuWeather, the hurricane has already caused the deaths of four people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Melissa is expected to move northwest initially, with the jet stream likely redirecting it northeastward. The expected landfall in Jamaica is projected at 5 AM EDT on October 28, approximately 40 miles west of Kingston. Afterward, the storm may hit eastern Cuba before moving northeast into the Atlantic Ocean. The risk to the US mainland, including Florida, remains low.

Understanding Hurricane Melissa

Melissa is a Category 4 hurricane in the Caribbean Sea, capable of causing significant natural disasters such as flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage in Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for extreme weather and stay updated on evacuation orders.
