YouTube app won’t come to Apple Vision Pro, Spotify remains ‘unsure’

According to a source, YouTube and Spotify will not release standalone apps for the Apple Vision Pro when it comes on February 2. The company’s first new hardware category in almost a decade is set to arrive in the United States in the coming days, but it is expected to come without support for three of the most popular video and audio streaming platforms: YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix. Customers with active subscriptions may be able to watch content using the built-in Safari browser, with some restrictions.

According to a statement released to Bloomberg on Thursday, the Alphabet-owned streaming platform has no plans to build a specific app for the Apple Vision Pro at this time. According to Apple, developers can also offer users to access the iPad version of their apps on the mixed reality headset, although YouTube users will not have this choice.

Meanwhile, the publication adds that popular music streaming provider Spotify will neither provide a standalone streaming app for the Vision Pro, nor will it allow users to access the iPad app through the headset, according to a source familiar with the matter. With over 600 million users and a 30% market share, Vision Pro owners will undoubtedly miss Spotify on the platform.

It is worth mentioning that both services may ultimately add support for the Apple Vision Pro, with dedicated apps running on visionOS, Apple’s operating system created specifically for the mixed reality headset. Companies may also simply offer their existing iPad apps, which are frequently updated, on the Vision Pro.

Until then, users of both platforms who purchase the Apple Vision Pro headset, which costs $3,499, would have to access YouTube and Spotify through the built-in Safari browser. The lack of separate apps from these platforms will also prevent consumers from accessing immersive ‘Environments’ based on the material they are watching.

When the headset is released in the United States on February 2, customers will have access to a variety of streaming apps and services, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, ESPN, and Apple TV+. Apple also revealed that consumers will be able to watch purchased or rented movies in both 2D and 3D using the mixed reality headset.
