Wilmington DMV Shooting Leaves Officer Wounded, Suspect Dead

An officer was wounded and a suspect was killed during an officer-involved shooting at the New Castle County Division of Motor Vehicles near Wilmington, Delaware, following reports of an active shooter on Tuesday afternoon.

Police scanner traffic first reported an active shooter at the DMV on Hessler Boulevard, prompting Delaware State Police to issue an alert as EMS teams staged nearby. The confrontation led to immediate lockdowns, evacuations, and a large-scale law enforcement response.

Active Shooter Alert Sparks Massive Police Response

Delaware State Police initially warned of an active shooter at the DMV, while New Castle County Police sealed off surrounding roads and diverted traffic away from the area. SWAT and tactical units were mobilized amid concerns of a possible barricade situation.

Authorities later confirmed on social media that the situation was no longer active after the suspect was taken into custody.

Governor Confirms Shooter Killed

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer later clarified that the suspect was killed during the exchange with police.

“Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased,” Meyer wrote on X, adding that state and local agencies were coordinating response efforts.

Radio transmissions indicated that one officer was struck during the initial exchange. Aerial units continued monitoring the area for any secondary threats.

Officer Transported as DMV Remains Closed

Emergency medical services confirmed the wounded officer was stable enough for transport. The suspect was treated under guard at the scene before being pronounced dead.

The DMV suspended all services indefinitely, cancelling appointments across New Castle County. Police urged residents nearby to stay indoors and away from windows, while schools enacted precautionary soft lockdowns.

Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation

Traffic cameras showed significant congestion as vehicles fled the area. Route 13, just south of Interstate 495, was shut down as part of the security perimeter.

Officials said no bystanders were struck based on early reports. Authorities stated that updates would be released through official channels as the investigation continues.
