Ryan Routh married Lora Frances Wilson in January 1989. They had three children: Sara, Adam, and Oran Alexander Routh. The couple divorced in 2003 after Routh filed for divorce in January, finalized in March.

In 2018, Routh moved to Kaaawa, Hawaii, and started a shed-building business with Adam.

Oran Alexander Routh had a falling out with his father and had not spoken to him before the assassination attempt. Following the incident, he said:
