Moment of Confrontation: Officer Asks Mangione to Remove Mask
The footage shows Altoona Police Officer Joseph Detwiler approaching Mangione at a corner table on December 9, 2024. When asked to show his face, Mangione complies but immediately lies about his name, claiming he is “Mark Rosario.”
The bodycam video was recorded by another officer, Tyler Frye, and was released as part of a Manhattan court proceeding.
Detwiler can be heard telling Mangione: “Someone called, they thought you were suspicious,” to which Mangione replies: “Oh, I’m sorry, um.”
Police had been conducting a large-scale manhunt at the time, and a McDonald’s employee reportedly contacted authorities after recognizing the suspect.
Police Identify Mangione Using a Fake ID
Detwiler asks Mangione for identification, and the suspect hands over a New Jersey ID displaying his face but under the false name he had provided.
The bodycam video shows Detwiler passing the ID to Officer Frye, who reads the information over the radio as officers work to confirm Mangione’s identity.
The footage was shown in Manhattan court last week before being released publicly. It is currently under review in a pretrial hearing to determine whether the evidence collected in Altoona can be used in Mangione’s murder trial.
