Heavy Snow Forecast in Alaska, NWS Warns Residents

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of interior Alaska, forecasting up to 9 inches of snow between Thursday afternoon and Friday evening.

Areas under the advisory include the White Mountains, high terrain south of the Yukon River, and the Chatanika River Valley. Portions of the Steese and Elliott highways are also affected.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes,” the advisory said.

Travel and Safety Precautions

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and check Alaska’s 511 system for current road updates.

“If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury,” NWS Fairbanks said.

Pedestrians should be especially careful on icy surfaces, including steps, sidewalks, and driveways.

Early Snowfall Ahead of Schedule

The region has already seen early snowfall this season. Over the past weekend, Fairbanks recorded 1.2 inches of snow, approximately two weeks ahead of the typical October 9th first inch.

“This snow is unlikely to stick around, but keep an eye on the horizon as winter is coming!” NWS Fairbanks noted.

Moderate to Heavy Snowfall Expected

The advisory warns of moderate to heavy snowfall, particularly in the White Mountains, with the highest accumulations expected at the Steese and Eagle Summits and the Upper Chatanika Valley Thursday evening into Friday night. Lower elevations may experience mixed precipitation.

The advisory remains in effect until Friday night, with updates provided as the storm develops. Residents are encouraged to monitor the NWS website and local channels for the latest information.
