Bryan Kohberger Agrees to Plead Guilty to All Idaho College Murder Charges

In a stunning legal reversal, Bryan Kohberger has agreed to plead guilty to all four counts of first-degree murder and burglary charges for the November 2022 killings of University of Idaho students, accepting a deal that removes the death penalty but guarantees life imprisonment without parole.

Additionally, the 29-year-old criminology PhD student abandoned his year-long not-guilty plea just weeks before his scheduled October trial, court documents reveal. Kohberger’s defense team negotiated the agreement after prosecutors presented “overwhelming DNA evidence” linking him to the crime scene, including:

  • Knife sheath DNA matching Kohberger
  • Cell phone records placing him near the victims’ home
  • Surveillance footage of a white Hyundai Elantra

The plea spares victims’ families a traumatic trial but denies them full evidence disclosure. “This isn’t justice, it’s cowardice,” said Steve Goncalves, father of victim Kaylee Goncalves. “He robbed us of the truth for his own survival.”

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson confirmed the deal prevents Kohberger from appealing, noting: “Life without parole ensures permanent removal from society.” Sentencing is set for August 30.

The murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin remain Idaho’s most high-profile homicide case. Kohberger will be held at the maximum-security Idaho State Penitentiary.
