A Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship faced an unexpected disruption Monday night when a physical altercation broke out between passengers aboard the Wonder of the Seas, prompting an early return to PortMiami.
The incident occurred on September 15 around 6:48 PM, during the first day of a four-day Bahamas cruise. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) officials reported that a verbal dispute escalated into a physical fight, leading the ship’s captain to notify local authorities and return to port.
Passengers Treated, No Charges Filed
By 8:30 PM, the ship had docked in Miami, where deputies and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) personnel were waiting. Two adult passengers were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital but later declined to press charges.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with passengers running toward the pool area, including a children’s pool that was quickly roped off. One passenger shared on social media that emergency personnel escorted about a dozen individuals off the ship.
Despite the incident, the Wonder of the Seas resumed its Bahamas itinerary, with planned stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island Coco Cay and Nassau, before returning on September 19.
Royal Caribbean Responds to Incident
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed that medical care was provided on board and said the cruise line is cooperating with authorities.
“Our team provided medical care to adult guests who were involved in an altercation onboard… As this is an ongoing investigation, we have no more information to share at this time,” the spokesperson said.
Cruise Line Safety Measures
This incident follows a similar brawl on a Carnival cruise in April, where 24 passengers were placed on a “Do Not Sail” list after fights in a Galveston cruise terminal. Cruise lines are increasingly cracking down on onboard altercations, emphasizing safety and security for passengers.
