At least 60 people have been confirmed dead following a massive fire at a hypermarket in Al-Kut, Iraq, according to multiple news agencies citing Wasit Province Governor Mohammed al-Miyahi on Thursday. The incident has shocked the community as rescue operations continue and the search for missing individuals persists.

Unverified viral footage circulated online shows a large portion of the building engulfed in flames, with thick plumes of smoke pouring into the sky.

Recovery Efforts and Casualty Reports

“We have compiled a list of 59 victims whose identities have been confirmed; however, one body was so badly burned that it has been extremely difficult to identify,” a city health official reported to Reuters. Rescue teams are working diligently to recover more bodies from the site.

While the precise cause of the fire remains under investigation, initial results are expected within two days, as reported by Iran’s state news agency INA.

Governor al-Miyahi mentioned that legal action has been initiated against the building owner and the mall. “We have filed lawsuits against the owner of the building and the mall,” he stated, highlighting the need for accountability in the wake of this tragedy.

Initial eyewitness accounts suggest that the fire was sparked by an air conditioning explosion. Officials have noted that there were no alarms, sprinklers, or suitable exits in the building. Tragically, the fire has claimed the lives of many children and women, with entire families found charred in the aftermath.

Mourning and the Community Response

Local authorities have declared three days of mourning in Al-Kut, as the community grapples with the devastating loss. “More bodies are still under the debris, and rescue operations are ongoing,” officials reported, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

As investigations continue, the tragedy has shed light on the urgent need for improved safety measures in public establishments to prevent such disastrous incidents in the future.
