Russia Warns US, South Korea, and Japan Against Targeting North Korea

The warning comes as the US, South Korea, and Japan enhance military drills in response to North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a strong warning on Saturday to the United States, South Korea, and Japan against forming a security alliance aimed at North Korea. His remarks came during a visit to Pyongyang, where he sought to strengthen military and economic ties with the isolated nation.

Strengthening Ties with North Korea

While in North Korea’s eastern port city of Wonsan, Lavrov met with leader Kim Jong Un and conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The relationship between Russia and North Korea has notably improved in recent years. Pyongyang has been supplying ammunition and troops to support Moscow’s efforts in Ukraine in exchange for economic and military support.

Concerns Over Military Technology Transfer

These developments have raised alarms among the US, South Korea, and other nations, who fear that Russia may share sensitive military technologies that could bolster North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Lavrov accused Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo of escalating regional tensions, stating,

“We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia,” as reported by the Russian state-run Tass news agency.

Military Drills Intensify in Response to North Korea

This warning comes as the US, South Korea, and Japan ramp up trilateral military exercises in response to North Korea’s expanding nuclear arsenal. On Friday, the three nations conducted joint air drills involving US nuclear-capable bombers, coinciding with a meeting of top military commanders in Seoul. They urged North Korea to cease all “unlawful activities” that threaten regional stability.

North Korea’s Perspective

North Korea has consistently criticized US-led military drills as rehearsals for invasion, justifying its nuclear program as essential for deterrence. Lavrov acknowledged North Korea’s position, stating:

“The technologies used by North Korea are the result of the work of its own scientists. We respect North Korea’s aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing nuclear development,” according to Tass.

Commitment to Mutual Support

During their discussions, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui reaffirmed Pyongyang’s “unconditional” support for Russia’s war in Ukraine. In return, Lavrov expressed gratitude for the contribution of North Korean troops in defending Russia’s Kursk border region from potential incursions from Ukraine.
