Trump Cancels Pakistan Trip — Then Iran Sends a “Much Better” Paper Within 10 Minutes

The Iran war’s most chaotic single hour of diplomacy just concluded. In the space of 60 minutes on Saturday, Iran’s foreign minister departed Islamabad, Trump cancelled his envoys’ trip to Pakistan, Iran produced a new proposal, Trump called it better than the first, and Araghchi landed in Muscat.

The ceasefire is still nominally intact. The war has not resumed. But the diplomatic landscape is more unstable than at any point since the original ceasefire was announced.

The Sequence, Minute by Minute

After a day-long visit to Pakistan, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi departed Islamabad, having delivered Tehran’s list of demands for ending the war to Pakistani officials. Pakistani officials told CBS News he was expected to return Sunday or Monday.

Barely had Iran’s foreign minister taken off from Islamabad, than President Donald Trump scotched his already sketchy plans to send Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to meet the Iranians in Pakistan. “I’ve told my people a little while ago, they were getting ready to leave, and I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18-hour flight to go there,'” Trump told Fox News. “We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18-hour flights to sit around talking about nothing.”

Trump said Saturday that Iran “offered a lot, but not enough” after he cancelled the planned trip. “They gave us a paper that should have been better,” Trump said. “And interestingly, immediately when I cancelled it, within 10 minutes, we got a new paper that was much better.”

What the New Paper Means

The 10-minute interval between the cancellation and Iran’s new paper is the most revealing detail of the entire episode. It means Iran had a fallback proposal ready — one it held back until Trump’s cancellation created sufficient urgency to deploy it.

This is a classic negotiating tactic: withhold your better offer until the other side walks away, then produce it at the moment of maximum drama to bring them back to the table.

Trump pointed to what he described as “tremendous infighting” within Iran’s leadership, but added he is prepared to “deal with whoever runs the show.” Trump reiterated they cannot get a nuclear weapon. “They will not have a nuclear weapon, it’s very simple… They offered a lot, but not enough,” Trump said from the tarmac before boarding Air Force One.

“A lot, but not enough” is the most substantive description Trump has given of Iran’s proposal since talks began. It means Iran moved — that the new paper contained concessions that Trump acknowledges as real. But the nuclear question remains the sticking point: whatever Iran offered was not sufficient on the enrichment question.

The War Is Not Resuming

Asked whether cancelling the trip means he is going to resume the war, Trump said: “No. It doesn’t mean that. We haven’t thought about it yet.” Trump also said Iran should call the US. “The Iranians can call us if they want. We are not gonna travel just to sit there.”

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke to Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian by phone on Saturday night after the in-person meeting with Araghchi earlier in the day. “During their warm and cordial conversation that lasted 50 minutes, the two leaders had a detailed exchange of views on the current regional situation and ongoing efforts,” Pakistani officials said.

Pakistan is maintaining the channel. Araghchi is in Muscat for the Oman leg of his tour. The new paper is with the US. The next move is Iran’s — specifically, whether it can produce a unified proposal on the nuclear question that Trump considers sufficient.
