In a tragic incident on Saturday, a mass shooting in Indianapolis left two people dead and five others injured. The shooting occurred shortly after the Independence Day celebrations.

Deputy Police Operations Chief Tanya Terry reported that the incident took place around 1:27 AM, and police are investigating the crime. Five victims were hospitalized, while one person died at the scene. A sixth victim entered a hospital for treatment. Later, one more victim succumbed to his wounds in the hospital.

According to the police officer, among the victims, three were minors, and details about the ages and conditions of the others are still pending. Authorities have arrested seven individuals for questioning and recovered firearms from the area.

Police Chief Calls for Parental Accountability

IndiaChris Bailey, the chief of police in Indianapolis, condemned the violence in downtown, particularly involving juveniles. He emphasized, “This kind of violence downtown or in any of our neighborhoods is completely unacceptable and unnecessary. Hundreds of unsupervised kids down here … I don’t know how many times I have to say it, we are not your children’s keepers! You are! And parents and guardians have got to step up. A kid is dead tonight, and we just don’t know the age of the young man down the street … still here, dead.”

Bailey noted that police received numerous calls throughout the night to address rising violence, stating, “I’m tired of it.” He added that police had made over 20 arrests and confiscated firearms from two minors before the shooting occurred.

He chastised parents for letting “hundreds of unsupervised kids” wander around the neighborhood after dark.

“We are not your children’s keeper. You are. Parents and guardians have got to step up,” he continued.

Despite the peaceful exit of thousands from the downtown area after the fireworks, some individuals remained and caused trouble.
