Authorities confirmed that Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 26, has been found dead following a harrowing four-day search after falling from a cliff near the rim of Mount Rinjani in Indonesia.

About Juliana Marins

Brazilian Tourist Juliana Marins Found Dead

Hailing from Brazil, the 26-year-old was an adventurous backpacker exploring Southeast Asia. Recent posts on her Instagram from Thailand and Vietnam revealed her passion for travel and discovery. Her family and friends remember her as a dreamer who embraced adventure with an open heart.

What Happened

Marins was hiking with a group of friends and a tour guide on June 21, near the crater trail of Mount Rinjani—Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, standing at 3,726 m—when she slipped and plunged approximately 1,600 feet down a steep cliff.

Indonesian Search and Rescue teams immediately launched a major operation involving about 50 personnel. Their efforts were severely hampered by harsh terrain, thick fog, and unstable sandy cliffs.

Four Days of Ordeal

Utilizing drones, rescuers first spotted Juliana on June 21, monitoring her movements as she reportedly slipped further down the slope through the night.

Despite attempts involving helicopters and long ropes, rescues were repeatedly delayed by poor weather and visibility. Finally, on June 24, her body was recovered by Indonesian SAR personnel after carefully navigating the treacherous cliff.

Family & Official Statements

The Brazilian government officially confirmed Juliana’s passing and extended condolences to her family and friends. In a heartfelt message via an Instagram account tracking the rescue, her family wrote:

“With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection, and support that we have received.”

Rescue Challenges & Trail Closure

SAR head Muhammad Hariyadi emphasized the operation’s complexity, noting that Juliana didn’t fall into the volcano crater but down a sandy cliff face, making rope access nearly impossible.

Indonesian Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni announced the temporary closure of the Mount Rinjani hiking route to ensure safety during the recovery and out of respect for Juliana and her loved ones.

Mount Rinjani, nestled on Lombok Island, attracts thousands of trekkers yearly with its dramatic caldera lake and sunrise vistas. However, its steep cliffs, sudden weather shifts, and shifting sands pose serious risks. Juliana’s tragic accident follows similar incidents in recent years, including multiple fatal falls.

Final Thoughts

The loss of Juliana Marins serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the unpredictable dangers even seasoned travelers can face. As the trail reopens, Mount Rinjani’s operators urge visitors to take extra precautions – prioritizing safety, experienced guides, and a deep respect for the mountain’s unforgiving terrain.
