WhatsApp Reportedly Testing Shortcut to Mark All Chats as ‘Read’

The reported feature is expected to make managing WhatsApp messages easier by introducing a new shortcut for marking chats as 'read'.

According to a feature tracker, WhatsApp for Android may be testing a new feature that allows users to mark all chats as read at once via a new shortcut. The functionality was discovered in a beta version of the app, but it may be available to users later.

It functions similarly to the ‘mark read’ functionality in the iOS version of the app, which changes the status from unread to read. Its development builds on other apparently in-development capabilities of the instant messaging service, such as clearing the unread message count.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is creating the functionality as a new tool for improved chat management. It was found in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.18.11. Following its implementation, users may be able to remove their unread message count by designating all received messages as ‘read’.

According to the screenshot shared by the feature tracker, it shows in the overflow menu, which can be found in the top-right area of the screen, below the starred messages option. While the option to mark all messages read is already present on WhatsApp for Android, it needs a few steps, such as selecting all messages and then hitting the mark as read option. Its rollout may provide quicker access to it.

According to WABetaInfo, the new shortcut is still in development and may not be available even to beta testers who have registered through the Google Play Beta program. It could be included in a future version of that app. However, while many features are tested in beta, not all of them make it to the public rollout stage.

In addition to the above-mentioned shortcut, WhatsApp is apparently creating other new functionalities. One of the previously announced features is claimed to include AR capability for video conversations on the platform.

It is expected to allow users to customize environmental factors such as lighting and background in video calls. It also has a specialized light mode and touch-up filters that claim to adjust the appearance in real-time.
