Australia To Officially Recognize Palestine As A State, Says PM Albanese

Australia will formally recognize Palestine as a state, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared Monday, joining leaders from France, Britain, and Canada in signaling similar intentions.

Growing Pressure Amid Gaza Crisis

The announcement comes after increasing calls from Cabinet members and public figures, amid growing criticism over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“A two-state solution is humanity’s best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering and starvation in Gaza,” Albanese said following a Cabinet meeting, according to Associated Press.

Condemning Israeli Military Plans

Canberra also condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans for a large-scale military offensive in Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of a peaceful resolution.

Formal Recognition at UN General Assembly

Albanese confirmed the recognition will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. He stressed the move depends on commitments from the Palestinian Authority, including excluding Hamas from government, demilitarizing Gaza, and holding elections.

This pivotal step marks Australia’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East through a viable two-state solution.
