40 Nations Have Joined the Hormuz Clearance Coalition — The Post-War Maritime Force Is Taking Shape

The world’s most important piece of post-war infrastructure is being assembled in real time, quietly and with minimal headlines. Forty nations have now formally committed to the Hormuz clearance coalition — a multinational force that will activate the moment a sustainable ceasefire is secured to clear mines, ensure freedom of navigation, and restore the world’s most important oil shipping lane to operational status.

What France Confirmed Wednesday

According to the French defense ministry’s statement on Wednesday, the effort “brings together more than forty nations” for a maneuver that will be “distinct from the military operations initiated in the region” already.

Forty nations. That number has grown steadily from the 30 nations who met at the UK’s Northwood headquarters in late April, to the 51 who joined the Paris summit convened by Starmer and Macron, to the 40-plus who have now formally committed forces or capabilities to the clearance operation.

France’s explicit statement that the effort is “distinct from the military operations initiated in the region” is the coalition’s most important political characteristic: these nations are willing to clear mines and protect shipping, but they will not fight Iran to do it.

The Assets Already in Position

The minesweeping vessel “Fulda” of Germany’s Bundeswehr Navy is seen moored before leaving for the Mediterranean, in Kiel, Germany, May 4, 2026. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stressed that repositioning the ship would save time if a decision was made by the government to join an international effort to clear the Middle Eastern waterway, but that any such deployment remained contingent on an end to hostilities between Iran and the US and Israel.

The Charles de Gaulle’s repositioning from the Mediterranean toward the region is the coalition’s most visible asset movement. France’s nuclear-powered carrier provides the air cover necessary for mine-clearance vessels to operate safely in contested waters. The Fulda’s departure from Kiel gives Germany a mine-hunting vessel within range of the Hormuz deployment within days of a clearance order being issued.

The UK has mine countermeasure vessels HMS Cattistock and HMS Chiddingfold pre-positioned in Bahrain as part of its standing Gulf deployment. The US has the USS Chief and USS Pioneer already operating in the strait. Together, the coalition has the mine-hunting helicopter capacity, sonar systems, explosive ordnance disposal divers, and remotely operated underwater vehicles required to conduct a comprehensive clearance operation.

The Six-Month Reality

The Pentagon’s confirmation that clearing Hormuz mines will take up to six months after a deal is signed remains the constraint that no diplomatic announcement can shortcut. Iran has been laying new mines throughout the ceasefire period. The Hormuz clearance operation — when it begins — will be starting from a minefield that has been expanding for 67 days, not the original minefield laid in March.

The 40-nation coalition is pre-positioned, funded, and politically committed. It is waiting for a single trigger: a sustainable ceasefire agreement between the US, Iran, and Israel that makes deployment possible without putting coalition vessels in a combat zone.

Every day the diplomatic track produces “Great Progress” without a signed document is another day mines are added to the clearance queue and the six-month clock has not yet started.
