With Gmail now you can make quick calls. With the latest update to Gmail, Google now brings the feature to allow its users to quickly call the sender of an email. Further, senders can make a call to the recipient, or vice versa, from within the Gmail app.
Google says that the update now lets users make audio and video calls right from within the app. On the Gmail app, users can now see the audio and video call options under the chats tab.
Once a user clicks on any of these options, they will be able to make a one-on-one call with the concerned person. Google hasn’t allowed group calls on its platform yet.
How to make audio/video calls on Gmail
Here is a step-by-step process that makes it easy to call users in Gmail.
- Ensure that you are updated to the latest version of the Gmail app on your Android or iOS devices.
- Next, you will need to open Gmail and tap on the “Chats” tab. For Google Workspace users, this is enabled by default. Regular users will have to enable the Chats option from Settings.
- Under the Chats section, you will see all the conversations listed. Tap on one.
- From the top corner, you can tap either the phone or video icons to make audio and video calls respectively.
- When you receive a call, you will see a floating call notification similar to regular phone calls. Gmail will also show you notifications for missed calls and alerts.

Gmail Calls: Facts
- Note that audio and video calls are only allowed on mobile devices only. Hence, users can make calls only from the Gmail app on Android and iOS devices. The web client version is yet to receive these features.
- Gmail calls will be based on the internet. Hence, you need to ensure strong and reliable internet connectivity.
