Google Photos Reportedly Adds Ultra HDR Feature

Google Photos is believed to be introducing a new tool that allows you to convert normal images into Ultra HDR photos. According to reports, the new editing tool is included in the most recent version of the Google Photos app for Android, and it repackages clicked photos to include additional image data. It is believed to generate images with potentially more vibrant colors, brighter highlights, and darker shadows on HDR-compatible screens.

Telegram user @greyishere spotted the feature, which was reported by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority. It is supposed to be available after updating the app to version 7.24.0.747539053. An ‘Ultra HDR’ option debuts in the Adjust section of Google Photos’ built-in photo editor, replacing the existing ‘HDR Effect’ setting.

It is believed to allow users to edit photos in more detail than SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) images, even after they have been captured. On HDR-compatible screens, such images appear with brighter highlights and darker shadows, preserving all detail. However, it is also capable of displaying them normally on non-HDR displays, ensuring maximum compatibility.

The report also mentions that Ultra HDR photographs in Google Photos have a smaller file size than the primary images. This is credited to their use of a smaller gain map, a file containing luminosity information and masks, to provide the best display experience for both SDR and HDR screens.

Notably, the feature was first reported to be under development in September 2023, but it was not publicly released at the time, forcing users to tinker with the app to activate it.

The Ultra HDR tool in Google Photos is reportedly being rolled out to all users worldwide. However, it is claimed to be a server-side update, which means that the company will need to enable it for all users. As a result, you may not see it in the Google Photos app right away after updating to the latest version.
