American Airlines Flight Wheels Catch Fire, Evacuations at Denver Airport

An American Airlines flight encountered a dramatic incident at Denver International Airport (DEN) on Saturday when its left main landing gear caught fire, leading to an emergency evacuation. Flight AA3023, bound for Miami, was on the runway shortly after takeoff when passengers and crew first spotted the flames.

Emergency Evacuation and Safety Measures

As thick smoke billowed beneath the aircraft, passengers and crew members were evacuated safely using emergency slides. Authorities reported one minor injury, and all 173 passengers along with six crew members are now accounted for. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident occurred around 2:45 PM local time, prompting immediate alerts to DEN first responders and the Denver Fire Department, who quickly arrived on the scene. The flames also led to a short-lived ground stop at the airport, further impacting operations.

Online Reactions and Footage

Videos circulating online captured the chaos as passengers slid down the emergency chutes and stood on the runway amidst thick smoke while fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

American Airlines Responds

In an official statement, American Airlines revealed that the aircraft “experienced a maintenance issue” with a tire on the landing gear just before takeoff. “All customers and crew deplaned safely, and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team,” the airline added.

This incident follows a similar occurrence in March involving a Boeing 737 engine fire at the same airport.
