Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov engaged in a heated exchange with a US journalist during an interview, strongly rejecting accusations that Moscow deliberately targeted civilian areas. The confrontation came after a Russian missile struck an American-owned factory near the Hungarian border.
Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s objectives in the war, stating that Russia seeks to remove security threats from Ukraine, protect Russian-speaking populations, and ensure Kyiv remains neutral, non-nuclear, and outside NATO.
He criticized the journalist for echoing Ukrainian narratives, saying reporters should not fall into President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “theatrics” and should instead act as “honest journalists.”

Lavrov Denies Civilian Targeting, Defends Missile Strike
Lavrov dismissed reports that the facility targeted was merely producing coffee machines. Instead, he claimed it was tied to Ukraine’s military industry. He accused Western outlets of ignoring what he called Ukrainian “terrorist attacks,” including strikes on nuclear plants and civilian areas in Russia’s Kursk region.
When pressed on whether Russia invaded Ukraine, Lavrov avoided a direct answer, citing referendums in Crimea and occupied regions as the people’s will.
No Putin-Zelensky Meeting Planned, Says Lavrov
Lavrov ruled out any immediate talks between President Vladimir Putin and President Zelenskyy, calling the idea premature. Speaking on Meet the Press, he said:
“There needs to be an agenda first. This agenda is not ready at all.”
Lavrov argued that a meeting would serve only as another opportunity for Zelenskyy to “be on stage” and criticized Kyiv for refusing to discuss territorial issues, which he said challenges US President Donald Trump’s efforts to mediate.
“To meet for Zelensky to have another opportunity to be on stage is not what we believe is useful,” Lavrov stated.
Ukraine Strikes Russian Nuclear Plant on Independence Day
The exchange comes as Ukraine launched drone strikes on a Russian nuclear power plant during its Independence Day celebrations. The attack caused a sharp fall in reactor capacity at one of Russia’s largest nuclear facilities and ignited a massive fire at the Ust-Luga fuel export terminal, according to Russian officials.
Despite ongoing peace efforts, the war—now in its fourth year—remains the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, with heavy fighting along a 2,000 km front line and continued missile and drone attacks on both sides.
